At Hamilton Family Counseling we specialize in therapy for children ages 1-12 with big emotions and challenging behaviors. One treatment modality we provide is “Parent Only Strategy Sessions” through which parents learn therapeutic play skills and behavior therapy skills so they become their child’s own therapeutic specialist.

What are Parent Only Strategy Sessions?

We have immediate openings for parent-only sessions with lunch hour, evening, and weekend availability. Through these sessions, parents can ask questions and get on the same page with quick, practical parenting solutions that both parents agree on.

During a session, parents learn the specialized play therapy skills of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (CDI Teach) and behavior therapy skills of the PC-CARE Parenting Protocol developed at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. Video examples are provided to illustrate all of the strategies.

At the end of each session, parents and therapist together co-create a behavior plan that is tailored to the strengths, values and needs of their family.

Several sessions can also be devoted to positive communication between parents so they can coordinate care effectively with each other to bring peace, calm, and warmth back to their home.

Many families prefer to have these sessions online because parents can attend from different locations during lunch hour, can save money and time by avoiding a drive to the clinic, and can save money on gas and child care for siblings while children nap or play in another room in the home.
